When did Halloween begin, and why?

Samhain (Shamhna), a Celtic holiday celebrated on November 1, traditionally represented the end of summer and the harvest as well as the beginning of winter. The Celts observed Halloween as the day the dead came back to Earth to celebrate the new year. Pagans would dress up in costumes, light bonfires, and leave out food and drink on Samhain to fend off spirits.

This practice of going door-to-door and asking for candy begs the question: why?

According to popular belief, trick or treating may be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where participants would dress up as ghosts and devils, dance around a bonfire, and collect gifts from neighbours in exchange for keeping the spirits at bay. The tradition of going door-to-door asking for candy dates back to Celtic Scotland and Ireland in the ninth century. Young people in Scotland and Ireland would go door to door, perform a "trick" for their neighbours in exchange for a snack, such as nuts, fruit, or cash, and then go home. First appearing in print on November 4, 1927, in Canada, the word "trick or treating" appears to have originated in the United States.
